Kitty Liang is a writer and visual artist living in Woodland California. She has two sons, Clyde and Otis, age 5 and almost 4. Nothing has altered her personhood, both mentally and physically, more than becoming a mother. This series of 16 paintings (in chronological order, beginning with pregnancy), painted over the course of the last 5 years, documents her experience. In these paintings, Kitty, Clyde and Otis are somewhat recognizable in the beginning. As time progresses, the three identities become more abstract, morphing into creatures that maintain a certain relationship with one another (as well as the outside world) while shedding much of their human form. Through these abstract representations, Kitty extrapolates from the struggles and ecstasies of motherhood… ultimately reaching out into the most essential aspects of human relationship.
