Emily grew up deep in the woods of North Carolina. She received a BFA from Calarts in '99 and shortly thereafter was overcome by a severe mental illness. Her work is always governed by its proximity to crisis, madness and the following ruminative digestion, and often grapples with a fraught relationship to psychiatry. The labor in her art (painting and drawing) runs parallel to inner effort, construction of explanation, and a yearning for acclimatization and acceptance.
